Cleaning Parts Industry

Industrial Parts Cleaning

De-oiling under vacuum
In this process, the components to be cleaned are placed in a vacuum chamber and heated by radiant heaters. The process temperature and pressure are adjusted so that any contamination on the components is vaporized.

Relevant Products: Liquid Ring, Rotary Vane, Claw, Screw

Dry-blasting
In this process, the work piece is blow dried with a side channel blower. The flow volume and pressure of the air stream are critical for the degree of dryness. The temperature of the air stream also contributes to the effectiveness of the drying process.

Flood injection washing under vacuum
In this process, the air is first evacuated from the washing chamber. A pressurized injection fluid wash (16 bar) also cleans hidden hollow passages and undercuts.

Vacuum drying
With vacuum drying, difficult spots such as blind bore holes, narrow lubrication channels and even internal passage ways can be dried completely, with no residual water remaining in voids or uneven surfaces. In this process, a vacuum is created in the washing chamber. When the pressure drops below that of the vapor pressure of the fluid to be removed, the fluid evaporates and the parts are dried. Most of the vapor removed is trapped in a condensate separator upstream of the vacuum pump. The residual vapor in the air is eliminated by the vacuum pump. Depending on how dirty the parts are, a water or solvent based detergent is employed. In some cases ATEX approved vacuum pumps are required for solvent based detergents, which may be explosive in nature.

Printing & Paper Industry

Due to the special properties of paper, vacuum and compressed air are essential features in paper manufacturing and processing.

Pre-Press
Applications
Vacuum is required for a variety of applications in the pre-press area, including preparing images and film for scanning or exposure and for copying printing plates. There are also many applications where over-pressure is needed as well, such as for guiding plates or film in automatic systems.

Press
Printing applications
In classic sheet fed offset presses, vacuum and overpressure is always needed for paper handling – at the feeder to separate the sheets, to feed the single sheets to the different colour-aggregates or to guide the sheets through the machine. All these applications need different amounts of air at different pressures.

Relevant Products: Claw, Side Channel

Post-Press
Applications
There are a variety of applications in the post-press arena. For example, side-channel blowers for folding and cutting machines; pressure-vacuum pumps and individual vacuum pumps and compressors for collating and book-binding machines; and radial blowers for removing waste paper.

Glass Industry

Large volumes of compressed air and vacuum are required in the manufacturing process of hollow glassware. High quality and reliability of all units and components is of prime importance, because equipment failure during production invariably means extremely high costs. For continuous 24-hour operation, rotary vane compressors and vacuum pumps offer the best solution.

Compressed air is used to form the blanks in the production machines. A compressed air system is needed to control the various shaping devices and the general air supply of the factory.
Rotary vane vacuum pumps are used to evacuate the glass moulds. This ensures high product quality and increasing the number of pieces per hour poses no problem.

For higher volumes vacuum pump stands are used. These two-stage systems consist of a rotary lobe and rotary vane vacuum pump and are used in the production of electric light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.Large volumes of compressed air and vacuum are required in the manufacturing process of hollow glassware. Wood Industry

A variety of vacuum pumps and compressors are used in the woodworking industry. The pumps are also used in woodworking as central vacuum systems; to improve efficiencies; and to minimise costs associated with hook-ups and special foundations which are no longer needed.
Holding and lifting
To ensure safe processing, work pieces are automatically clamped to the processing table by means of suction heads. A stable and constant minimum vacuum must be generated to ensure that work pieces are held securely in place during mechanical processing.

Preservation
Before or after processing, wood must be protected against the destructive effects of environmental influences such as heat, moisture, insects and micro-organisms. The practice of soaking the wood in a preservative solution is widespread, but has the disadvantage that the liquid penetrates only a few millimetres into the wood. Complete protection is possible, however, if the wood is degassed and dried with the aid of a vacuum pump. The preservative agent then penetrates much deeper and optimizes the protective effect.

Wood drying
The use of vacuum dryers in conventional wood drying chambers can reduce a typical drying time from several weeks to a mere 3 to 4 days. During the drying process, pressure in the chamber is gradually reduced to the minimum. The chamber is pressurized with steam and the air is extracted to prevent cracks and colour changes in the wood that can be caused by too high an oxygen content. Radial fans circulate the steam and convey the heat to the wood. Further steam condensate will be exhausted from the drying chamber.

Plastics Industry

The use of vacuum and pressure in the plastics industry:
The manufacture of machines is closely bound up with the production and processing of plastics. Plastics manufacturers develop and produce optimized plastics for a variety of purposes. From these, the processor makes high quality products which are used in almost every industrial sector, from the automotive industry and telecommunications to the processed foods industry. Machine manufacturers are the technical link between production and processing. They produce the tools and machines which are required to convert the raw material into a plastic sheet, an electrical cable or a car bumper.

Food and Beverage Industry

In recent decades the food and beverage industry has undergone widespread changes from small to middle and large firms. The ensuing “industrialisation” of food processing has created many applications that use vacuum pumps and compressors.

Bottle filling machines in breweries
When beer is bottled, its residual oxygen content must be kept as low as possible. To this end, breweries employ two different methods, either singly or in combination:
Bottles are flushed with CO2 and filled with beer via a long-tube filler. In this case, the filler tube is inserted into the bottle and the bottle is flushed with carbon dioxide before actually being filled with beer. This method consumes a relatively large amount of CO2.
Bottles are evacuated and then flushed with CO2. This method greatly reduces carbon dioxide consumption because most of the oxygen is already extracted.
By reducing seal liquid consumption, L-Series circulation systems offer clear advantages over other liquid ring pumps.

De-aeration of mineral water
Mineral water from natural springs contains carbonize acid, minerals and iron. The iron dissolved in the water oxidizes when it comes into contact with the air, giving the water an unpleasant taste. The water needs to be de-ferrized at a pressure of about 50 mbar, but first a vacuum pump is required to remove the carbonation and then reintroduce it to produce sparkling water.

Deodorizing of salad oils and fats
Prolonged exposure to air gives salad oils and fats an unpleasant odor and flavor. Before they can be processed further, these oxidation products must be removed. This is accomplished by injecting steam, which absorbs the odor and flavor particles created, and then extracting the steam with a vacuum.

Environment Protection

Products that monitor, analyze, store and recover materials that are harmful to our environment are becoming more sophisticated everyday. In addition, manufacturers worldwide are increasingly challenged with producing products in an environmentally sound environment. Gardner Denver can provide solutions for any challenge requiring pressure, vacuum or flow within the environmental arena.

Water Treatment

Wastewater disposal
With the use of central vacuum systems the disposal of wastewater can be effected at the same place. The wastewater can be collected, drained and disposed of in complete housing areas at the same time. With the use of vacuum up to 97%  of the wastewater can be transported uphill.

Chemical Industry

Vacuum pumps and compressors are used in many applications in the chemical industries. Technologies used are dry running and oil lubricated rotary vanes, liquid ring and rotary screw pumps as well as ejectors. Engineered systems designed and built for our demanding customers assure safe and reliable operation.

Compressed air can also be found in numerous uses in this industry. Both oil lubricated and oil free compressors deliver a safe and reliable form of energy that can be used on both sensitive products and in hazardous environments.

Another product range is available for the safe transfer of chemical and petrochemical liquids in bulk at both standard and high pressure.

Laboratories

In demanding laboratory environments, technicians must rely on their equipment for dependable and accurate performance for a variety of critical functions, including the preparation of biological and chemical samples for analysis.

Compact, cost-effective vacuum pumps from Thomas and Welch provide a reliable, low-maintenance vacuum source for laboratory applications requiring distillation, drying and concentration.

Pneumatic Conveying

In the pioneering age of pneumatic conveyance, demand was largely for transporting foodstuffs such as grain and flour. Today, such installations are constructed for a wide variety of uses, such as transporting

goods in dust particle form (flour, cement)
    grain-type goods (dragées, granulate, pellets)
piece goods (pneumatic tube conveying systems) and
    mixed goods.

Special requirements must be observed in these areas. Mixed goods, for example, may not be mixed with different size grains during transport. In addition, the goods should not rub together, which would cause abrasion. This is just as important for explosive granulate as it is for avoiding static electricity.

Pour-able goods can generally be transported with vacuum or pressurized air conveyance systems.
